Apurímac is a Quechua word that means “The talking God”. The Apurímac river is the most important and farthest affluent of the Amazon river. This canyon, considered among the country’s deepest, is 2,000 m / 6,561 ft deep, and this rafting trip ranks among the 10 best in the world. Apurímac is an important granite canyon with shining vertical walls, incredible geological formations caused by water erosion and beautiful sandy beaches, were we will enjoy our lunch and camp. We will have the pleasure of observing condors, deer, river otters, foxes and a variety of birds.
DAY 1 – CUSCO – HUALLPACHACA
We leave Cusco in our private transport driving approx. 4 to 5 hours, until we reach Huallpachaca bridge (2,100 msnm / 6,890 ft). Here we will have lunch and set up the necessary equipment in the rafts, this will be followed by a safety talk. We will paddle for one hour along class III and IV rapids until we reach our first campsite.
DAY 2 – APURÍMAC RIVER DESCENT
From this location we will enter the deepest part of the canyon and one of the most spectacular parts of this expedition. We will gradually increase the difficulty level to class III and IV rapids, passing through gigantic granite walls with enormous rocks that have eroded over millions of years. There will be two portages and we will run rapids such as “The purgatory”, “Space Odyssey”, and “The Labyrinth”, among others. The campsites will be set upon beautiful sandy beaches where your lunch will be served. Fingers crossed we may even see some wildlife.
DAY 3 – APURIMAC RIVER - CUSCO
On the final day we will run the famous rapid “Tooth ache” and other class IV and V, like “Babalua” and “The last smile”. Afterwards, we will run a series of class II and III rapids until we reach our take-out at Primavera Hacienda (1,900 msnm / 6,234 ft). After a few cold drinks and lunch we will depart in our transport and return to Cusco.
We recommend previous experience and it is absolutely essential to know how to swim and to be in shape.
This is an expedition trip and we must take everything in the rafts. Only the basic personal belongings are permitted and must not exceed 8 kg (17.5 pounds) per person.
At 2,000 msnm / 6,562 ft, the weather will be warm during the day and at night the temperature shouldn’t alter too much.
The night prior to departure, we will give you the dry bags(special waterproof bags to protect your belongings), so it won’t be necessary to bring any luggage.
Since the water could be very cold, neoprene suites and impermeable jackets will be provided.
