CHOQUETACARPO TREK
7 DAYS / 6 NIGHTS
1 /
Embark on a breathtaking journey along one of the best-preserved and most spectacular Inca trails, surrounded by stunning natural landscapes, native forests, and awe-inspiring mountains.
Itinerary
DAY 1:
We will leave the Sacred Valley passing through Ollantaytambo, climbing the Malaga pass to descend to Santa Maria and then stop for lunch in Santa Teresa. We will continue climbing through the valley of Santa Teresa to the Llamojas pass until we reach Yanama (3550 m.) where we will set up our first camp and start the hike.
DAY 2:
Today will be a long day of hiking. Very early in the morning we will start descending the Yanama valley, to then climb a cobblestone Inca trail that enters the Otiyoc ravine, among native forests, next to the stream and at the foot of the snow-capped Choquetacarpo mountain. On the way we will enjoy a beautiful view of the rock formations of the snow-capped mountain of the same name, also called Pumasillo, for its resemblance to the claws of a puma which some people also call "the Peruvian Torres del Paine", until reaching our camp in Qelcamachay (3850 m.).
DAY 3:
We will leave the camp to continue our ascent to the Choquetacarpo pass (4650 m.). This day, both on the way up to the pass and the descent to the other side, we will walk a cobbled Inca trail in a very good state of conservation, one of the best in the entire region, a true jewel of Inca archaeology! On this day we will take it easy to enjoy the surroundings without haste. We will arrive at our campsite in Incamachay (3850 m.).
DAY 4:
This day most of our walk will be downhill until we reach the archaeological centers of Vitcos, Rosaspata, Ñustahispana and the famous white stone, before reaching our next camp at 3050 m. Another day of few kilometers.
DAY 5:
After breakfast, we will start walking along a path that goes up a ravine to the Asutina pass (4050 m.). Then we will go down another ravine to our camp in Collpachina at 3700 m.
DAY 6:
This day we will start climbing, passing through some sections of the Inca trail, to the Yanacocha pass at 4500 m. From here we will descend a little, but we will remain at the same altitude passing through several lagoons including Yanacocha and Soyrococha, to the Mojón pass from where we will start our last descent to the camp at 3800 m.
DAY 7:
We will continue down a ravine with native forests and sections of the Inca Trail in a very special ecosystem. The hike ends in the valley of the Sacsara River, near Yanatile, where we will be picked up by our transport to take us to the thermal baths of Cocalmayo in Santa Teresa, and from there to the Sacred Valley.
Notes
• Horses will carry the equipment, and each person will only have to carry a small backpack with a jacket, rain jacket, snacks and water. In addition, we will bring saddle horses in case someone gets tired.
• This is a demanding hike, with steep ascents and descents, so regular physical condition is recommended.
• We recommend breaking in your trekking shoes, to make them comfortable and avoid blisters.
• During the day, the temperature does not drop below 8°C and can drop to -5°C at night; depending on the time of year, with the possibility of rain.
