Huayhuash is a hidden gem of the Andes. This 30 km range spans three regions of Peru, featuring some of the most stunning peaks, glaciers, and lakes. Join us on a trek that takes you around the entire range, getting you as close as possible to its breathtaking beauty.

Itinerary

DAY 1:

We will leave Lima early for Huaraz in our private transport. The trip is an 8-10 hour drive. We will sleep in a small hotel in the area. 

DAY 2:

After breakfast we will leave in our transport to take a walk for a few hours to acclimatize. We will return to Huaraz. 

DAY 3: HUARAZ - MATACANCHA - MITUCOCHA


We will leave very early in our transport to Chiquian and to Matacancha (5-hour drive), from where we will start our hike: we will start with a climb to the Cacananpunta pass (4750 m) from where we will have a spectacular view of the snow-capped Jirishanca, Ninashanca and Rondoy mountains. Here we will leave the Ancash region and enter the Huanuco region. After the pass we will descend passing through the Pucacocha lagoon until after 6-7 hours we will arrive at our first camp in Mitucocha (4180 m.).

DAY 4: MITUCOCHA - CARHUACOCHA (4-5 H)

We will start hiking on a long and progressive climb to reach the Carhuac pass and then descend to the camp beside a beautiful lagoon at 4100 m. where we will arrive early to rest after a 4-5 hour hike. This day we will have the option to take a detour and do a longer route, but with better views. 

DAY 5: DE CARHUACOCHA - HUAYHUASH

This is the day with the most spectacular views of the trip. We will hike to the Siulá pass (4810 m.) passing by the viewpoint of 3 lagoons to reach our camp in Huayhuash (5-6 hours, 14 km). 

DAY 6: HUAYHUASH - VICONGA

This day we will also start with a long and progressive climb until we reach the Portachuelo pass (4700m.) where we will leave the Huánuco region to enter the Lima region. From the pass you can see the Raura mountain range with its snow-capped León Dormido mountain, the Aquilpo and the Viconga dam. We will arrive at the "hot ravine" with thermal baths in Viconga. The camp has WIFI connection. 

DAY 7: VICONGA - PAMPA ELEFANTE

We will climb to the Cuyoc pass under the snow-capped mountain of the same name. Then we will descend to Pampa Elefante to camp at 4550 m. 

DAY 8: PAMPA ELEFANTE- HUAYLLAPA

We will climb to the Santa Rosa pass (5024 m.) followed by a long descent to Cutatambo ending at our camp in Huayllapa (3550 m.).

DAY 9: HUAYLLAPA - DIABLO MUDO

We will climb to the Tapush pass at 4800 m. where we will re-enter the Ancash region. We will descend to the camp at the base of the snow-capped mountain Diablo Mudo. 

DAY 10: DIABLO MUDO – JAHUACOCHA

We will climb to the Llaucha pass and then descend to our last campsite in Jahuacocha. 

DAY 11: JAHUACOCHA – LLAMAQ

On our last day we will leave very early on a 4-5 hour hike to Llamaq, where we will meet our transport that will take us to Lima. 

Notes

• Horses will carry the equipment, and each person will only have to carry a small backpack with a jacket, rain jacket, snacks and water. In addition, we will bring saddle horses in case someone gets tired. 

• This is a demanding hike, with steep ascents and descents, so regular physical condition is recommended. 

• We recommend breaking in your trekking shoes, to make them comfortable and avoid blisters. 

• During the day, the temperature does not drop below 8°C and can drop to -5°C at night; depending on the time of year, with the possibility of rain.

What to bring

• Sleeping bag (from -7ºC to more) 

• Headlamp with a fully charged battery 

• A duffle bag or backpack for your things, which should not exceed 12 KG, including the sleeping bag and mat

• A small backpack or daypack to carry during the hike 

• Special trekking shoes 

• Comfortable sneakers or sandals to wear with socks at camps 

• Swimsuit 

• A pair of pants 

• Warm clothing including thermal underwear, a fleece sweater or jacket and a down jacket 

• Several pairs of socks for the hike and thick socks for camping 

• Rain jacket 

• Rain poncho 

• Sunglasses 

• Sunscreen 

• Insect repellent 

• Cap or hat for the hike 

• Wool hat and gloves 

• A water bottle that fits in the small backpack
